YOKOHAMA

GOODYEAR

The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company was founded in 1898 when Frank Seiberling purchased what would become the first plant of the company with money borrowed from his brother in law. The rubber and cotton had to be brought across the world to an isolated town which had a limited rail transportation. Seiberling decided to christen the company by the name of the courageous pioneer Charles Goodyear, the discoverer of vulcanization of rubber. It was also Frank Seiberling who chose the wing-foot logo, wich remains to this day.


PIRELLI

Founded in 1872 by Giovanni Battista Pirelli in Milan, the Italian firm now occupies the fifth global tire manufacturers place, with a market
share of around 5%. Present in over 160 countries, the tire industry has achieved a group turnover of 3992.9 million in 2009. The group has 24
factories in 12 countries and a test center in Italy. In late 2008, Pirelli had more than 30 000 employees worldwide. Like all first-rate
brands, Pirelli has focused its strategy on innovation. Investment in R& D amounts to from 3 to 4% of turnover. The Italian group, among other things, developed in the 50's Radial Cinturato a radial tire made with reinforced textile cables.
